We would love to host you at Athelstane House! Built in 1860, Athelstane House is Queenscliff's oldest operating guesthouse. A complete interior renovation added many contemporary luxuries but the building still maintains its historic exterior.

Athelstane House is a contactless venue, you will receive an information pack 2 days before your arrival via email and text message. Staff are on-site limited hours, however are available via call and text. If you have any questions about our contactless service please don't hesitate to get in touch.

<< Please note that several of our key staff are taking a well earned break over our low season in 2023. This means our service is temporarily changing and some dates, as per the calendar, are available with Room Only Rates only. Please see the calendar above for up to date information on when our B&B offerings are available. Housekeeping service will be unavailable over June Long Weekend, however additional supplies will be provided, we apologise for any inconvenience.

Our nine rooms have their own en-suites (eight with corner baths**) all with televisions, split system air conditioners, ceiling fans and breakfast in our dining room or via room service available with B&B rates. All rooms have in room tea (T2) and coffee facilities and all have bar size refrigerators.

All guests are welcome to enjoy every part of the hotel including front sitting room, verandahs, courtyard and garden. Please note that common areas are available for use from 8:00am - 9:00pm, due to the age and amplification of these areas guests are not permitted to gather in groups in these areas outside of this time; please see our noise policy for further information.

We have a variety of rates with different inclusions, to check what is included in your reservation please consult your confirmation email or email us for further details.

Eight of our nine rooms are located on the first floor (approx. 20 steps up). One of our rooms is located on the ground floor - The Courtyard Room .

*WIFI is available in common areas, however, due to pending infrastructure in Queenscliff may not be available in your room. WIFI dongles are provided on request if required in rooms without a strong WIFI signal. For further information please email info@athelstane.com.au

** Please note that all of our rooms have the shower over the bath except our Courtyard Room which has a walk in shower. Unfortunately, due to the buildings structure we have been unable to install handrails at this time. Should you require more information on this please email info@athelstane.com.au

Terms & Conditions

NOISE: Athelstane is a quiet, tranquil venue where guests come to relax and enjoy our hospitality. Excessive noise will not be tolerated at any time but especially after 10pm. In its absolute discretion, management reserves the right to charge offending guests in the first instance of noise disturbance resulting in a complaint to management a $150 call out fee per room involved in the complaint. In any further call outs management reserves the right to charge offending guests to the full extent of compensation provided to other guests adversely affected by the noise (up to $4,500). Common areas are available to be used from 8:00am - 9:00pm daily. Groups are not permitted to gather in guest rooms or common areas outside of these times. As Athelstane is a heritage property it does not have modern sound proofing, the house is generally a very quiet venue however if you're a light sleeper please ensure you bring headphones or ear plugs for comfort.

LOCAL NOISE: Please note that there is currently (June/July 2023) a residential renovation occurring nearby Athelstane House. Although the works are typically not noisy or disruptive on quiet, still days noise may carry. We recommend for light sleepers and those who wish to nap during the day bring earplugs or noise cancelling headphones to ensure comfort...just in case!

SMOKING: Athelstane House is a non-smoking property. Smoking inside the rooms is strictly prohibited. Our designated smoking area is the garden. Smoking is NOT PERMITTED on guest balconies, the courtyard or communal verandahs. Any guests found to be smoking in their room will incur a $1,200 cleaning fee plus any fees associated with room changes or cancellations on future reservations that cannot stay in the room.

ETA: Check in is available from 2:00pm onwards. Athelstane House is a contactless venue, you will receive an information pack 2 days before your arrival via email and text message. Please note that staff are on-site limited hours, however are available via call and text. If you have any questions about our contactless service please don't hesitate to get in touch.

GIFT VOUCHERS & ROOM CREDITS: Use of gift vouchers or credits issued after a cancellation is subject to availability and at the discretion of management, please contact the guesthouse via email to reserve a room using a gift voucher or credit. Vouchers and credits can be used in one stay only, any unused value of vouchers or credits is forfeited, i.e. one voucher or credit cannot be used over multiple visits.

BREAKFAST HOURS: Breakfast is served from 8:00am - 10:00am daily. Breakfast can be enjoyed in our dining room or via room service.
PUBLIC HOLIDAYS: Breakfast service on public holidays is from 8:00am - 9:30am sharp.

ROOM CONFIGURATIONS: The house does not have any extra beds or cots available. Please note the room size, bedding and configuration when booking as this cannot be changed.

Athelstane House will not be held responsible for any damage to vehicles in the car park or property left behind in the rooms or public spaces of the guesthouse. By providing your credit card details you authorise Athelstane House to charge the nominated credit card for the amount of your stay as well as any additional services rendered or goods consumed from our restaurant and guesthouse as well as any damages caused or theft. This includes but is not limited to excess cleaning $75/hr, replacement of facilities cost price + $50, late checkout without prior arrangement $75/hr and damages resulting in cancellation of future bookings cost or repair + $300 per day during repairs. Any property left behind can be posted via cash on delivery, due to the cost of postage being higher than replacement we do not send phone chargers. In the event that your key is lost or taken with you a $40 replacement fee will be charged to the card provided, in the event the key is returned this charge will be refunded in full.

Payment Policy

A valid credit card number is required to secure a booking. Pre-payment in full is made via the credit provided 48 hours before arrival, except packages which are fully prepaid at the time of reservation.
Payment via direct deposit can be made via contacting the guesthouse.
Payment is made in full on reservation for Queenscliff Music Festival and Queenscliff Rod Run weekends.

Please note a 0.9% surcharge is applied to all payments processed via debit or credit card. Athelstane House offers payment via Visa or MasterCard for our customers however there are very high costs associated with accepting these cards. Rather than inflating our prices on room rates to compensate for the credit card acceptance costs we’ve decided to allow our guests to make the choice as to the payment method they prefer, you can avoid the surcharge by paying via direct deposit. Please ask our staff for further information.

Cancellation Policy

Cancellations or changes to bookings for this room must be made at least 7 days prior to the check in date and time or you will be charged the full amount of the stay. If the room is subsequently re-sold you are entitled to a credit for 100% of the stay redeemable for 12 months.

Cancellations or changes to bookings in peak periods (December to April and long weekends surrounding public holidays) as well as group reservations (5+ rooms) must be made at least 14 days prior to check in date and time or you will be charged the full amount of the stay. Bookings made for Queenscliff Music Festival can be cancelled free of charge up until 24 September, after this date the reservation will be charged in full if a replacement reservation is not found.

Cancellations made due to enforced travel bans or lockdowns incur no cancellation fees. If the reservation has been pre-paid guests are entitled to a full dollar amount credit valid for 12 months.

Cancellations made due to being a covid positive case or close contact are assessed on a case by case basis; please contact the guesthouse for more information.

Cancellations made due to change of mind surrounding covid where no government travel policies are in place are subject to the same policy as normal reservations above.

We highly recommend all guests purchase travel insurance to ensure their own safety and peace of mind - even when travelling domestically.
