Miena, in the central highlands of Tasmania. The highlands are central to Tasmania and can can be easily accessed from a number of directions – from Hobart in the south via Bothwell, from Strahan on the west coast, from Launceston in the north, or from Devonport and Deloraine in the north-west. The Central Highlands landscape consists of mountain peaks rising from button grass plains. During winter (and sometimes summer), snow settles on the shores of the lakes and clear crisp days satisfy those who enjoy feeling close to the environment. The area is rugged and isolated and weather conditions vary, and change quickly. Snowfalls, fog, rain and sunshine can occur in a single day in any month of the year.
The Great Lake Hotel is ideally situated to take advantage of the areas many excellent trout waters. There is a profusion of lakes and lagoons, including Little Pine Lagoon, Penstock Lagoon, Arthurs Lake as well as the 25km Great Lake.
The Great Lake and Miena is part of the Central Highlands of Tasmania and was inscribed on the World Heritage list in 1982.
The trout fishing in Great Lake itself is excellent (as it is in most of the waters in this central highlands region) it is renowned for its summer ‘hatches’ of Highland Dun mayflies and the fat, speckled brown trout that dine greedily upon them. The Great Lake attracts fly-casting visitors from across the country and around the world. For people not interested in fishing the shores of the Great Lake are ideal for bushwalking.
