Le Colonial, by the Chinese fishing nets of Fort Cochin, is Asia’s oldest colonial house. Located right next to Saint Francis Church, it was once the home to both Saint Francis and Vasco da Gama. Built in 1506 as the Portuguese Governor's home, it was one of the very few houses to have been spared 150 years later when the Dutch took over Fort Cochin and destroyed the town. It then housed the Dutch Governor of Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie (VOC), better known as the Dutch East India Company, for the following century and a half. In 1795, Jan van Spall sold the house to the British. In turn, they passed it on to J. Thomas, the legendary tea trader.
These five captive centuries of history have now been lovingly restored and the hotel is a true living museum. Treasures of art from the colonial past have revived that era, turning Le Colonial into a “club” for discerning travellers.

Viceroy is Le Colonial’s largest and most noble suite. Located on the first floor of the house, it overlooks the front garden. The verandah is equipped with a desk and sitting area as well as a dining table for romantic room service, candlelit dinners or relaxed private breakfasts. The marble and teak bathroom offers a large counter with double sinks, a vast walk-in shower and a separate bathtub. A range of luxury Cochine bathroom amenities is provided.
Combined with Aide de Camp, Viceroy can form a wonderful family suite.

Located on the ground floor, away from the main living areas, Vasco da Gama overlooks Saint Francis Church. The elegant suite is named after the Portuguese explorer whose last residence Le Colonial was. Portraits of Vasco da Gama dress the walls and pieces of art from a lost era revive the home’s colonial heritage. When set together, the beds turn into a queen-size bed. The teak and marble bathroom offers a classic bathtub along with a walk-in shower and a range of luxury Cochine amenities is provided. The suite, with its two poster twin beds, appeals, amongst others, to families as parents can sleep in Tipu Sultan which is literally three steps across the corridor.

It is also a discreet reminder that the owners of Le Colonial are French. The Teak floorboards and raftered ceilings, the gentle afternoon light through the louvred windows, the heritage two poster king size bed, large cosy armchairs and the antique wardrobe and desk transport you to another era, as does the rest of the house.
The teak and marble bathroom, with separate bathtub and walk-in shower, nicely complete the luxurious experience along with a range of luxury Cochine amenities.

Although the smallest bedroom at Le Colonial, Aide de Camp is romantic and full of charm. It is many of our returning guests’ very favourite rooms. While the bedroom overlooks the hotel pool, the private verandah - which is the same size as the bedroom - overlooks the front garden. The twin two poster beds with poplin canopy can be put together to make a double bed. The teak and marble bathroom features a large stand up shower with luxury Cochine amenities.

Tipu Sultan, although heritage in style and design, is the only room with a little Indian influence, such as the impressive large almirah.

This romantic bedroom is named after the very last owner of the house before it was purchased and restored in 2004. Located on the first floor and down a corridor, its balcony harbours views of gardens and the hotel pool. The bathroom features a large walk-in shower and a range of luxury Cochine amenities are provided.
The comfortable four-poster bed, dressed with local vibrant silk soft furnishing, the antique wardrobe and the outdoor rattan campaign chairs are reminiscent of the hotel’s past colonial history.

Our published full rates include complimentary breakfast, traditional afternoon tea and a choice of a three-course lunch or dinner.
Child Policy (extra charges to be paid directly at the hotel):
- Children under the age of 2 are free of charge (no extra bed provided)
- Children 2 to 10 INR. 1,150 + GST *
- Children 11 to 18 INR. 5,550 + GST *
* The above charges include breakfast, traditional afternoon tea and a choice of a three-course lunch or dinner. You will be charged directly at the hotel.
Payment Policy
All applicable taxes and charges are subject to Government regulations.
· In order to secure a booking a payment of the total amount needs to be made.
· Should you need to cancel your booking, after you have made your payment it will only be refunded, if we are able to re-let the room. We will charge INR 6500 cancellation fee and any bank charges incurred by us in the refund.
· If you wish to change the date of your stay and have already paid the full amount we will, at our discretion, try to accommodate you, subject to INR 6500 administration fee. If this is not possible or the dates we offer are not acceptable the booking will be cancelled as per above.
When you make a reservation online your credit card details will be received. The payment will be processed by us.
· Credit/Debit card cancellations will be charged 5% extra.
Postponing of bookings will be treated as per the cancellation policy.
On December 24th and December 31st 2022 a mandatory Gala Dinner charge will apply. The Gala Charge is INR 5,900 per guest .
