Property Information
Te Kāinga Atawhai is a 4 room - 16-bed residence that Whānau of tangata māuiui may use for overnight stays in order to have ease of access to their Whānau members who are in North Shore Hospital.
The facility is primarily designed for use by (Māori and non-Māori) Whānau of patients who live outside the Auckland region and are unable to find/afford accommodation in the Auckland region. On occasions, referrals may be accepted for Whānau who live in the Auckland region; but this is reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
The Whare is operated by He Kāmaka Waiora Māori Health Services.

National Travel Assistance criteria:
Whānau may be eligible for travel assistance if the Whānau can answer ‘yes’ to one or more of the questions in the checklist below.
- The Whānau travel more than 80 km one way per visit (for a child i.e. aged under 18 years) or 350 km one way per visit (for an adult).
- The Whānau visit a specialist 22 or more times in two months.
- The Whānau visit a specialist six or more times in six months and travel more than 25 km one way per visit (for a child) or 50 km one way per visit (for an adult).
- The Whānau is a Community Services Card holder and travel more than 25 km one way per visit (for a child) or 80 km one way per visit (for an adult)
